Castleford Tigers have announced that recent signing Mark Edmondson has been forced to retire from the game.
The forward, 28, has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, but was hoping to put those behind him.

"This is a disappointment for the club but a much bigger blow for Mark," said Tigers football manager Michael Robinson in a statement.

"He had hoped to make a fresh start but that isn't to be and we wish him well in whatever the future holds for him."

Edmondson took the decision after failing a stringent club medical, having signed at the end of October from relegated Salford.

The former St Helens forward had agreed a 12-month deal with the Tigers and was confident his injury troubles were behind him.

"The injuries seem out of the way and I'm looking forward to pre-season," he said at the time.

"It's almost like a fresh start for me and another chance so I'm determined to go for it."

Edmondson spent eight seasons with Saints and also had a year with the Sydney Roosters in Australia's National Rugby League in 2006 before joining Salford.
