There is an interesting first page article written by Tony Adams for the RLW highlighting the players chosen from the premiership winning team (since 2000) after winning the Grand Final.

The table reads:

2000 - World Cup - Brisbane - Darren Lockyer, Wendell Sailor, Gorden Tallis, Shane Webcke

2001 - Kangaroos - Newcastle - Andrew Johns, Danny Buderus, Matt Gidley, Ben Kennedy, Adam MacDougall

2003 - Kangaroos - Penrith - Joel Clinton, Ryan Girdler, Craig Gower, Luke Lewis, Trent Waterhouse

2004 - Tri-Nations - Canterbury - Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley, Andrew Ryan, Willie Tonga

Where does this leave the Tigers and Cowboys?

Neither club will get 4 or 5 players in the Roo squad in 2005, is this fair or should more players be rewarded for their form in the finals series?

True but the 2 teams in the GF are better teams rather than star players I believe.

^True. Neither club has any star forwards, so the numbers aren't very good.

Just on the Penrith one....

Joel Clinton toured by never got a game.

Ryan Girdler was injured and I think he either didnt play a game or he played on game and that was him finished.

Craig Gower played 5/8th.

Luke Lewis played a tour match against Wales and then didnt play again.

Trent Waterhouse played off of the bench.

Keep in mind that Chris Anderson took Darren Smith off the street to play for Australia rather then giving Lewis or Clinton a Test jersey.

Australia played Craig Wing and Phile Bailey as starting Test centers rather then give Lewis a Test jersey.

The Australia side toured without a specialist 5/8th of any kind rather then give Premiership winner and former Dally M Medalist Preston Campbell a Test jersey.

Form winger Luke Rooney didnt even make the test squad.

Clive Churchill Medal winner and form hooker Luke Priddis didnt even make the Test squad.

So yeah, we did get four players at one point in the squad, but the Panthers were screwed BADLY.

Says a lot about their coaches...maybe Sheens should get a run!

True that, but just on the tigers, not in the roos squad but they'll get like 3 in the NZ squad with the likes of Whatuira and such (more if marshall decides to play)

I'd like to think some of the Cowboys could get at least a spot on the squad. Sing is an encumbent isn't he. I'm sure they'll make room for Matty Bowen and possibly a bolter from the Cowboys pack should they win. As someone else posted elsewhere, I don't think O'Donnell would look out of place.

If the side was picked on form and not incumbancy, there would probably be more cowboys, tigers and eels players in the squad, but the aussie selectors have this philosophy that if they have done it for us before, they will do it again.
