View Full Version : Bad Boys.
From Matt Starkey.
The jury has returned and the verdict has been handed down: the Roosters were the most undisciplined team in the competition this year, closely followed by the Raiders, Dragons, Sea Eagles and Sharks.
On the good side of the ledger, the remarkable rise of the Tigers to this season’s Grand Final can be partly explained by them being the most disciplined. The Broncos and Bulldogs, two clubs renown for their closely controlled tempers and fair play, weren’t far behind.
It has been a remarkable year of footy but the statistics on sin-binnings, reports and send-off’s show a mixed message when it comes to evaluating your team’s overall performance. It is a common theme for both Grand Finalists to have a low total of these three misdemeanors, however when it comes to making the semi-finals anything goes.
Whilst the Raiders and the Roosters both failed to qualify for the September action, the Dragons, Sea Eagles and Sharks all had high tallies yet managed make the eight. In the case of St George Illawarra it is an amazing statistic. They had two sin-binnings and eleven players placed on report but still pressed for the minor premiership in the final round of the regular season.
Eventual minor premiers, the Parramatta Eels, managed to clock up double figures in the bad-boy stakes, but avoided having any players sin-binned. The glaring exception to the rule is the Bulldogs, who had only five players reported and were the second most disciplined team (equal with Brisbane) but couldn’t scrape into the finals.
This season’s ultimate bad-boy honours are awarded to John Hopoate. Hoppa’s disgraceful act at Brookie in round 2 earned him a 17-match spell on the sidelines and he was subsequently run out of the game. Meanwhile, Ben Cross for the Raiders comes in second. He managed to get himself sin-binned three times this year in what must have been a headache for coach Matt Elliot.
Team Sin bin Report Sent off Total
Broncos 0 5 0 5
Bulldogs 0 5 0 5
Cowboys 1 6 0 7
Dragons 2 11 0 13
Eels 0 10 0 10
Knights 4 7 0 11
Panthers 3 4 0 7
Rabbitohs 3 8 0 11
Raiders 4 10 0 14
Roosters 4 10 1 15
Sea Eagles 1 10 1 12
Sharks 2 10 0 12
Storm 2 9 0 11
Tigers 1 2 0 3
Warriors 2 6 0 8
Interesting seeing the Tigers right down the bottom and the Cowboys up top. Think it will affect the GF?
I like all this info you guys get!
It's hard to get sent off these days unless you pull someones leg up in a tackle, 5 metres from the line.
A late and high shot will see you in the judiciary but no bin time.
You might get suspended but in a grand final, who cares?
You've taken the half back out and win Grand Final.
I agree - I think the refs a little to lenient on the use of both the send off rule and the sin bin. Was thinking though that the sin bin perhaps could be 5 mins instead of 10?

Dragons with 11 on report, the most reports out of all of them. that ain't good!
But I wonder how many of them actually faced suspensions?

that was terrible. just shows how much refs think that they are all important.

i tell ya what it shows. It shows that refs go into games with a preconcieved thought of players and over-react when they do something.

ill back that one up - was it Clark? I cant remember but he seems to carry grudges with his reffing.

I think the refs are mostly fair.
I don't think they're being self-important, they just need to keep authority over the game and make sure there is respect.
The backchat sin-binning was obviously a mistake though, but he's dealt with the consequences of that. Refs aren't perfect, and we don't really know what was happening in the leadup to that incident.
If they do a bad job we give them hell, and if they do a good job nobody says a word... it's kinda a loveless job, innit?
No he is just one ref that I think carrys grudges and past inderscretions into the next game....

actually i do know what was happening in the lead up..it was in a news paper article last year.
Some refs came out(hayne, clark and someone esle i cant remember) and said they watch tapes during the week and they spot where teams have problems and target that area. David kidwell came up as a "serial ref basher" as in always mouthing off at the refs. So they said they would target that from now on. Billy slater also came up as a "diver" and the refs siad they would keep an eye on him...so now everytime a player holds onto slater for that little bit longer a ref wont call it because the refs think he is faking it.
Kidwell and slater get un-fairly targeted in those respects. Morley also gets the rough end of the stick with refs....

i only ever bag a ref when it is warranted, and i don't go too far. i just expose the bad call. overall, the refs do an ok job. to those people that constantly bag the refs, i would like to see you do it (PARANoIR does :) )

why would you like to see us do it? we arent the paid professionals THEY are.
If i got paid to do it and had the training i would. Ild also do the job if i had good eye sight...but guys like hayne and clark dont even have eyes going by some of their calls this year.
This year they were crap IMO. There was bad calls all over the place...sure humans make mistakes but we also learn from them and the refs didnt learn from any of their mistakes. If they make a bad call they should be criticised or dropped, just like you are in any job. And yes i do praise them if they make a good call...also they get rewarded for doing their job properly by staying in 1st grade.

robert finch needs to go simply for not getting better refs in and not punishing the ones that make terrible calls.
