Just when youask for NSW teams in QLD threads;-)
Geezus cant make your life too easy can we - let you get away with simple errors like that - what do you think this is bush week? :guit:
Cheers ;)
Have we got anymore teams to nominate?
Queenslander, with your centres, don't you think we as a state need to mix it up this season recognising the need for a change in particular in the centres? Bowman and Berrigan vs Gasnier and Cooper is a mismatch - I am not sure how you select Berrigan or Bowman before Justin Hodges or Steve Bell. I would even look at the 'kid' Greg Inglis before those two.
We have been dominated out wide by NSW's bigger backs and I think that we need to look at some size out wide to counter possible selections like Gaz, Cooper, King, Tahu, Grothe, Rooney etc
It is time for Queensland to look at alternatives in 2006. No, we don't need to replace all, though we need to look at some fresh legs and in particular in the centres. Shaun Berrigan and Paul Bowman are great Queenslanders though should IMO be not considered in game one.

Of course Hodges will be in the running for selection, some more good performances from him may get him into the team. My team is based on performances as at Round 3 and my team is based mainly on experience....things can/will change. ;)

So which is it mate - based on performance to round 3 or experience? Or both?
Aaron Payne will come into contention for my side and would of been selected ahead of Cameron Smith if not injured. The Big League magazine lists Payne as being out until round 5 - if he comes back and picks up where he left off, he is another player I would be introducing to Origin for two reasons.
1. Combination with Bowen and Thurston - the NSW Blues would have a trio that could bust them any minute of the game and also avert attention from Darren Lockyer.
2. More variety from dummy half than Cameron Smith - Smith is a very, very good hooker and simply gets the job done with minimum fuss. Payne is in the same boat that adds impact from dummy half, with Thurston slotting the goals, Smith's goalkicking is not as important as it once was perhaps either.

Up to round 3 this year and includes last years performances. Thus my team looks very similar to last years. Its very good that Queensland has so many options on all positions which are very good signs for the team.
But off the field many fans will discuss team selections with of course ideas varying from fan to fan. ;) You have some very good ideas, perhaps they should be directed to the official selectors of the team not me :p

Who needs to name a team now or in the future. Queensland will win every state of origin game ever played. If you don't beleive me just ask any QUEENSLANDER. Go The Maroons. Go The Canetoads. Go The Underdogs. Queensland during State Of Origin? THERE IS NO OTHER TEAM. No matter who they pick for OUR team. We will still be the best on the night, no matter what the score is. I cannot wait till next year when their are players from the TITANS, BRONCOS & COWBOYS all representing Queensland in the 3 biggest matches of the season. BRING IT ON. Opps sorry make that 4. 1 - Matt Bowen - hasn't let us down in the past. Electric in attack, pretty confident in defence too.
2 - Greg Inglis - Well his form speaks for himself, I just think he'll give us an edge.
3 - Brent Tate -I know he's been injured, but if he linked up with Hodges, I think it could be somethign special lol
3. Willie Tonga - Toss up b/t him and Tate. Tonga has been pretty good since returning for Dogs, nice and powerful, good in defence. Would like to see him in more matches though this year, ditto with Tate too.
4 - Justin Hodges - Can match some of their bigger centres in gaz and coop. Has been on fire
5 - Billy Slater - Cant not have him, we missed him dearly when we left him out last year.
6 - Darren Lockyer (c) - Will dominate with a great pack around him
7 - Scott Prince - I'd lov eto see him back in the no.7 for maroon, links up with Locky well.
13 - Ashley Harrison/Norton
12 - David Stagg - reason i'd include him is his solid defence but hes a fairly mobile too.
11 - Mick Crocker
10 - Steve Price
9 - Cameron Smith
8 - Shane Tronc
Interchange
14 - Thurston - can slot in a fair few places, where as scotty is more specified as a half
15 - Travis Norton/Harrisson
16 - Ben Ross
17 - Petero Civo - Well i know people think he's getting old etc, but last 2 rounds for Broncos he's really stepped up, also worked on tackling technique. He could easily come on for some impact when the likes of Tronc and Price come off, towards the later stages of the halves.
18. Shaun Berrigan - Yes indeed, never would happen, but would love it see him here, and at the Broncos, not really a playmaker, and doesn't know what to do with the ball and his winger in the centres. But hes solid in defence. and a good dummy half runner. Pretty quick too, could come in handy, when their fowards get tired. He also knows how to find the line too through good support play (aka last year when Lockyer was on fire).

16. Sam Thaiday...he's impressed me with what he's done this year OR Dallas Johnson, wouldn't be very impactful off the bench, but he can tackle to save his life.
17. Brent Tate..can be used as a Centre or Wing, and if the Fullback gets injured, Inglis can move back there.
18. Darren Lockyer. Form doesn't warrant selection.
That's the side I'd take, given that Lockyer has not reached out to me with his form this season. If I had to have Lockyer, it'd be as follows:
1. Lockyer (c)
2. Inglis
3. Hodges
4. Tonga
5. Sing
6. Thurston
7. Prince
8. Civo
9. Payne
10. Price
11. Thorn
12. Crocker
13. Harrison
14. Bowen
15. Thaiday/ Johnson
16. Webb
17. Tronc
If we want to win, we need to pick the form players we have in the right positions, which means Thurston and Prince must be the halves.
I must say, I'm glad a lot of you guys aren't selectors, the thought of picking guys like Milton Thaiday in the centres is a bit odd considering we've got so many good centres like Tonga, Hodges, Tate, Steve Bell, Shaun Berrigan, Josh Hannay, Paul Bowman..all of which would rate higher than Thaiday as a centre.

Thank you for that Mr Selector - my QLD side does not include Petero Civoniceva whether I am right or wrong the care factor is zero. I would not have him in any of my representative sides after last season.
That is all that needs to be said, after 2005 (barring the opening Tri-Nations game) he did nothing with Craig Fitzgibbon to earn a recall into any rep side. They were part of the problem up front, not part of the solution and the lack of impact in attack or defence made us easy pickings.

WHY? Thurstons in way better form. and so is Locky.

Well the way they are playing... it would almost warrant it... but 13/17 is a bit exessive IMO.
WHY? Thurstons in way better form. and so is Locky.
For 1, Lockyer isn't in better form then Scott Prince
and 2: No-one controls the game like Prince.
Prince will put his 5/8 in the best position for him to set up a try. It wouldn't matter if Thurston or Lockyer.
Don't forget...Prince has been playing with Fitzhenry, the worst 5/8 in the comp.

Darren Lockyer is back in form and playing better football than Scott Prince at the moment - no question at all about that. Lockyer is in a confident Bronco side who are giving him a hellova' platform to work with whilst Prince struggles in a hot/cold Tigers team. Prince has not been setting 2006 alight at all. We all know Lockyer struggle in the early rounds (no trial form) though he like Brisbane has warmed to the task and is looking really good with plenty of improvement in him and the team.
No one controls a game like Prince? Hmm...Andrew Johns for one comes to mind and Thurston has stepped up to that level surpassing again Scott Prince. Brett Kimmorley behind a dominant pack will beat you 9 times out of 10 as well.

And has only won 1 game since playing with fitzhenry. locky is the best 5/8 for Qld. in the past prince a thurston have had a chance with locky and have played well but not spectacular. both need to be in the team but not at locky's expence. id have prince of the bench

Yes, Johns and Kimmorley both can control games and I think Kimmorley controls a game similar to Prince but I don't believe Thurston is a dominating half back. He is running off the back of a great football team and we have yet to see him play beside Prince.
Prince is still putting his side in a position to score but if you have a guy like Fitzhenry at 5/8, you can forget about scoring points.
One just has to look at the opportunities Prince gives Benji and Hodgson.
Imagine if he was giving Thurston and Lockyer those opportunities!

Prince is a great half back
Thurston is a great 5/8 (and a good half back)
Lockyer is a great Fullback (and an ok 5/8)
Why not put them in thier best positions?

All the above is true, but throwing Lockyer into a position that he hasnt played in for years is a dangerous move. Especially if there are other players that can fill the fullback role: Bowen, Slater, Schifcoske

That is the strongest point against the idea but who honestly thinks Lockyer couldn't handle it?
Bowen has to be in the side but struggles at the start of the big games.
If he starts, he will be peppered with bombs.
He always produces his best at the back end of the half.
Did you watch the Cowboys against the Knights? He wasn't involved until he chipped and won the game.
Origin last year...If it wasn't for his intercept against Kimmorley, he would have had a shocker.
Bring Bowen off the bench!

Yeah, i agree. But id like Lockyer to move back to fullback full time, for the broncs, qld and australia. it could well be a disaster if he was thrown into the fullback role for origin, as you say he hasnt played there for years. Bennett should eat humble pie and play lockyer at fullback for the broncs. Id love to Prince, thurston and lockyer all in the same team.

Have you been watching the same Johnathon Thurston as the rest of the NRL community? If we go back to the 2004 Grand Final where he was great from the bench (even casting an eye over his performances in limited opportunities that year) Thurston has gone from strength to strength. Truth be known, Thurston IMO was the Clive Churchill Medal winner in 2005 though missed out as his side lost. Harsh call? No, look at the tape and stats from that game and he was every bit if not more dominant than Prince.
Thurston was a revelation last season, I don't need to tell you that as he won the Dally M Medal as well as the RLPA Player of the Year award and this season he is the most dominant player in the competition.
You sight the fact that Thurston is playing in a great football team - a little unfair given a dominant half is as good as the team he plays in especially when looking at his forwards. Look at Langer, look at Stuart, look at Alexander, Sterling and the list goes on. Johns is perhaps an exception to a degree as he can dominant like no other when on the back foot.

Don't get me wrong Deegan...I'm not doubting Thurston's ability to play the game. I mentioned his ability while he was playing for the Bulldogs...a lot of people were doubting him back then.
He's in form and playing brilliant and the reason I believe he should play 5/8 for Queensland.
That doesn't mean he dominates his team or the game, like Johns, Prince and Kimmorley does.
Gasnier is also a brilliant player but he doesn't come in and dominate the game.
I wont be looking back at statistics
Statistics don't pick up a player that reads the game and communicates this with the rest of his team.
Every team needs that type of player.

Hunt will get a look in but Bowen or (after Game One) Slater should get the spot ahead of Hunt. Unless Hunt plays like he is possessed by the league gods.

Sorry to anyone from Queensland hoping to see Milton Thaiday play SOO this season... that dream is gone...

Thaiday out for six weeks
By Philip Henderson
May 01, 2006
MILTON Thaiday's State of Origin dream is all but over for 2006, with the Newcastle fullback likely facing six weeks on the NRL sidelines with an ankle injury.
Thaiday suffered significant ligament damage after rolling his left ankle shortly before half-time in the Knights' 24-18 win over South Sydney yesterday.
He will see a specialist tomorrow to decide whether the injury requires surgery.
Club doctor Neil Halpin assessed Thaiday today and said he was confident the custodian would not need to go under knife, but he said the ankle would not be sufficiently healed to return inside six weeks - even if the player wore a brace.
The 26-year-old former New South Wales rugby union player had made a cracking start to his second year at the Knights, scoring five tries in eight games to put himself in the picture for possible Queensland Origin selection.
But a six-week break would keep him out of action until the second match of the Origin series.
In other injury news, Sharks prop Ben Ross will be out for the season, as had been expected, after scans today confirmed he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Friday's 40-12 victory over Penrith.
The Queensland Origin forward, who sustained the injury when attempting a tackle on former teammate Joel Clinton in the opening minute of the match, will see a specialist tomorrow.
He is expected to face a six- to nine-month recovery.
Meanwhile, St George-Illawarra halfback Mathew Head will visit a specialist on Wednesday to determine the extent of the strain to his right knee, but the Dragons have already ruled him out of Sunday's fixture against the Sharks.
Teammate Luke Bailey will nurse knee and rib injuries for the next two weeks, but he is also facing two charges at the NRL judiciary.
The prop was cited today for a grade-one careless high tackle and a grade-three striking charge from the Dragons' loss to Melbourne, with an early plea for both ruling him out for two weeks.
The news was far better for Manly hooker Michael Monaghan, the former Sea Eagles captain cleared of a broken hand after scans today.
"It's a bit of a relief, a broken hand is usually four to six weeks, so to have him right for this Sunday against the Wests Tigers is good news for us," Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler said.
Meanwhile, Knights back-up hooker Luke Quigley has undergone surgery on his broken jaw following an incident at a Newcastle hotel last Friday.
The club issued a statement today saying a security tape showed Quigley being attacked from behind by two men in the car park of the hotel about 2.30am.
Quigley, who expects to be sidelined for six weeks, is considering whether to press charges if his assailants are identified.

The QLD selectors for Origin differ to that of the Test panel - the Origin panel are tipped to be more in favour of Matt Bowen for Origin and I heard where quietly gobsmacked to see Bowen miss the Test call up.
Inglis too fresh? "If your good enough, your old enough" and if we are looking at who are the form fullbacks in the competition, Inglis since going back to fullback has been the form fullback of the competition. He is a definate contender though will more than likely fill one wing position.
Karmichael Hunt will not let Australia down tonight and a strong showing will see him definately push for Origin selection. The feeling out there is that we could have our Test fullback miss Origin all together.

I woudnt be surprised.
Personaly i would love Bowen to be on the bench, with Locky starting at fullback, bringing bowen on 15 in with a tired defence. But as i said if i was to put a bet on it, i would go for Hunt.
Inglis is the next superstar, and i agree if he is old enough he is good enough. But that doesnt mean a roookie should get the gig.
Anyways for the first time in a long time Qlders see some light at the end of the tunnel. And have some players to choose from.
Fullback: Hunt, Slater, Shif, Wesser, Inglis, Lockyer, M.Thaiday
Center: Hodges, Berrigan, Tonga, Bell, Tate, Hannay,
Halves: Lockyer, Thurston, T.Smith, Prince, Burns
Front row: Petro, Price, Webb, Tronc, Thorn, S.Thaiday
Second row: Renoldson, Johnson, Stagg, Crocker, Thorn, Parker
Lock: Flannery, Harrison, Carroll, Norton
Hooker: PjMarsh, C.Smith, Payne?
Utility: Mcguire, Flannery, Bowen, Berrigan
My QLD back line as I have posted in another thred,
Lockyer
Wesser
Hodges
Tonga
Inglis
Thurston
Prince
supersub: Bowen

Ben Ross is out for season
Flannery is out for a few weeks.
Tahiday is injured for 6 weeks as well.
Hannay has retired from rep (i read somewhere on the cowboys site, but i don't know)
How does everyone think that Tate deserves a spot after 1 game back form injury?

Check the dates on some of these posts, the majority of the above would not of been known and members would not be going back to amend their team. Any change(s) to the team can simply be reposted. Thanks for pointing it out, all the same, the majority will re-name their side as we get closer to the event.
As for Tate Teegy, I think he has to prove his fitness and that he is somewhere near his best form before we gamble on him for Origin 1. I think Origin 2 is more realistic to be truthful. He will play some part in the series.
Game 2 might a stretch to Deegs. with Tonga and Slater going to be available.
I think Brent Tate is a better all round player than Slater and if he is fit, he should be on one wing - his performances on the wing for Australian have been nothing short of sensational. I think he will slot in before Slater or Tonga.

I also think Tate is good on the wing but will need to get some games under is belt before playing Origin.
I'd pick him on the wing before these other centres we are using.
However...I wouldn't pick Tate before Tonga in the Centres!
