Kimmorley wants another chance
By Dean Ritchie

Brett Kimmorley - the man who was dumped after throwing a wild intercepted pass in last year's State of Origin series - last night appealed to selectors to be given another chance as Blues halfback.

The Blues' No.7 jersey is up for grabs after The Daily Telegraph revealed yesterday that Andrew Johns has played his final game of Origin football.

Sharks half Kimmorley is adamant he's the man for the job.

"Definitely, yes. I can't change what happened last year but now there's a spot available I'd love to continue in rep football," Kimmorley said. "Craig Gower would be in the same position, as would Matt Orford and Trent Barrett.

"There wasn't a free spot there because Joey would have been there for sure. But he's not in contention now."

Asked did he stand a better chance of representing NSW with Ricky Stuart no longer coach, Kimmorley said: "Ask Ricky. I don't want to go there."

Kimmorley was sacked after the opening Origin match last season after throwing an intercept pass for Matt Bowen to score and give Queensland a dramatic golden-point victory.

Sharks coach Stuart Raper is adamant Kimmorley deserves another chance.

"I said after last year's series I thought he was treated poorly," Raper said. "I know Brett has never given up the desire to play State of Origin.

"Every player has made errors in matches but you don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

"I don't think he worries about last year - there has been plenty of water under the bridge since then.

"He'd love to play Origin again. Not just to make amends but because he wants the opportunity.

"This is the best I have seen Brett look since I've been at Cronulla."

Gower is considered a slight favourite for the Blues' halfback job ahead of Kimmorley and Orford, but selectors may also consider Barrett as a halfback.

NSW coach Graham Murray was last night cautious to push any player ahead of the other.

"I noticed that Brett Kimmorley, Craig Gower and Matt Orford were all put into a bracket of possible NSW halfbacks," Murray said.

"I would have to agree with that and I mention them in no particular order.

"All three have credentials at that level.

"I have coached the three of them.

"They are all very clever and are good operators as No.7s.

"I admire the way they play the game."

Johns revealed he would play the one-off Test against New Zealand in Brisbane on May 5 before quitting representative football to focus on a possible second NRL premiership with the Knights.

Graham Murray was his club coach at the Hunter Mariners and enjoyed success - he may not be as far away from a NSW jumper as we might think.

Brett Kimmorley is a world class player on his day, easily amongst the three or four best halves in the world, though if we are going off form in 2006 he is behind Craig Gower at this point and arguably just behind Matt Orford.

NO NO NO NO Never let him near a Blue jumper again. Not just for that one pass - but I cant stand the flat attack he loves to try.

Compare their respective rep records - Id take Barrett over Kimmorley any day.

Never mind the rep records....Kimmorley is a better halfback, IMO.

Never mind rep records? Why choose him a REP game if his rep records are shyte.
He has repeatedly fallen at the higher level in the apst - shows to me he isnt capable of stepping up.

If thats the case then why choose him, even if he is a better 7?

NSW, pick Kimmorley at your own risk, Gower or Orford would be one of my first picks.

Gower for me.

Kimmorley has played 3 games for country, 6 games for NSW, 13 tests and a roo tour in 2003, tri nations in 04.....so he hasnt done to bad.

Barret has 7 games for nsw, 11 tests and a kangaroo tour in 2001, tri nations in 05

I cant recall every game but Barret prolly hasnt played alot of rep footy at halfback.

Barrett good player, but for his club each and every week Kimmorley plays halfback and plays it damn good.

I guess thats where we differ, I see him as a good club 7, but that is about it. He just doesnt have it at the next level. I dont think he plays it damn good.

We agree to disagree on that point then. I still think a good club halfback is better then a good club 5/8.

the only way the blues will pick kimmorley is if Orford gets hurt and the training camp is at twin waters :P

I'd pick Anasta over both of them.

I still think Craig Gower deserves the number seven jumper for NSW and he will partner Trent Barrett if the selectors are choosing the best side available.

As for Brett Kimmorley, I would suggest some look at his games for Australia when partnering Darren Lockyer before telling us he has repeatedly failed at rep level - he was nothing short of sensational. Sadly for Kimmorley (a premiership winning halfback), unless he gets another chance at Origin level, he will always be remembered for THAT pass. Kimmorley is rated by Andrew Johns as his toughest rival, good enough for me. I remember when he taught the great man a footballing lesson one day at Shark park scoring a perfect 10 from 10 by the RLW when thumping the Knights.

Trent Barrett is a good club footballer who excels at rep level. When thrown in at halfback, he has always stood tall for NSW and I am certain he is a Man of the Match award or two (or three). He missed a good chance in last years Tri-Nations to cement himself as a genuine threat to Lockyer's role - he failed in both games and even spent time in the sin bin on one occasion.

Matt Orford I would have had before Kimmorley so far this year, though yet again on the weekend he failed to take a close game by the scruff of the neck which raises the eye brows of selectors - he needs to come up big in the tight games consistently not one in every four.

Kimmorley's an idealist and he's very in your face but needs his team around him to be up with his way of thinking before he can dominate the game.

Once he grabs hold of a game, not even Andrew Johns can take a game away from him.
Johns on the other hand is free flowing and is easy to coach.

I'm just glad the Sydney media continues to bag Kimmorley, which in turn makes it very hard for the man to grab hold of the State of Origin series.
Good for Queensland!

I don't know if the word 'deserve' should come into picking the State side.
I think you should pick the best side capable of beating the opposition.

I can understand players that 'deserve' to get picked in the Australian side.
That is the highest honour.

Gower should be the 1st option "if" we are looking at form over the opening rounds. He is just a lil' mile or 2 ahead of the others from what i've seen so far. Orford and Kimmorley would be on par with each other atm, Orford slightly ahead because he has had to adjust to a new team whereas Noddy hasn't.

On a sidenote: Can we please stop playing players out of position even at Origin level? Barrett is a #6 not a #7, play him there or not at all...

YES YES YES, Give Kimmorley the Blues half back spot. I know he has played well at International level and hes good at club level but he seems to try to hard at Origin level and that forces mistakes and as a Queenslander that wont bother me. In all honesty he really shouldnt be crucified for one errant pass. Top class players redeem themselves well after a bad game or play. I really do think Origin may unnerve him a bit but he can overcome that with a good game
