Maryborough a Sea of Maroon
from www.qrl.com.au
A MONSTER crowd at Maryborough’s Eskdale Park has thrown its full support behind Mal Meninga’s XXXX Queensland Maroons and shown regional passion for rugby league remains as strong as ever.
Wide Bay Division Manager Gary Dunbar estimated over 3000 fans were on hand to witness the Maroons squad go through their paces in a grueling session under performance co-ordinator Billy Johnstone.
An autograph signing at the end of the session saw some queues stretched several hundred metres long.
Not even a late downpour could deter fans who came to see their heroes ahead of next Wednesday's opening Harvey Norman State of Origin match at Telstra Stadium, Sydney.
“It has been an excellent promotion,” said Dunbar.
“The training was rigorous and the enthusiasm of the squad shone through. I think everyone was particularly impressed by that and, although the crowd was huge, it was respectfully silent.
“There were people here that we hadn’t seen before or who haven’t been involved for a while. People were saying it was back to the glory days. For rugby league in this area that’s great.”
A strong presence of supporter gear and the large media contingent added to the sense of occasion, with TV helicopters hovering overhead.
Numbers swelled in the crowd as students finished school and workers knocked off for the day early.
The nightly schedule sees The Carriers Arms Hotel, Alice Street, Maryborough hosting a State of Origin Team Function commencing at 6.45pm.
Maryborough is located three hours north of Brisbane and is the headquarters of Wide Bay Rugby League, the region in which coach Meninga first played junior football
The QRL would like to take this opportunity to thank local senior and junior leagues, council and government representatives for their assistance in making the day a success.
What a massive turn out for the Maroons training run - good work!
Any idea when the team fly out to Sydney?
Maybe I'll get em at the airport.... :naughty:

Locals Shape Up to Mighty Maroons
FORMER Brisbane Broncos player Darren Burns will be among those to face the mighty XXXX Queensland Maroons in a special opposed training session at Kawana this weekend.
In what will be the public’s last opportunity to watch Mal Meninga’s Maroons before they head to Sydney for Wednesday’s Origin I showdown, the team will take to Quad Park at 5pm on Sunday.
This session was originally scheduled as a closed training run, but team management has made a decision to allow members of the public to come along and show their support.
It is important to note that although this session has been thrown open, there will not be opportunities for autographs this time around, due to prior commitments for the team.
Also welcoming the public’s support on Sunday will be a selection of Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast representative players.
Plucked from the Maroochy RSL (Sunshine Coast Gympie) league, the selection features players to appear at both the upcoming 47th Battalion in Bundaberg and the QRL Divisional Championships, at Kawana.
A tentative list of players selected for the occasion is listed below. Among them is veteran forward Darren Burns, now captain-coach of the Gympie Devils.
There is a particular significance to the opposed session, with coach Meninga growing up in the same as the locally-based team.
Sunday’s open session follows a huge day at Maryborough’s Eskdale Park on Wednesday, where over 3000 fans had the opportunity to meet, chat and photograph the 2006 XXXX Maroons
