Anasta will get the nod
By David Riccio
May 14, 2006

BRAITH Anasta will be named as NSW five-eighth today - just weeks after admitting that he was struggling for club form at the Sydney Roosters.

Anasta, the Blues five-eighth for the final two games last year, will partner Craig Gower in the halves.

Wests Tigers captain Brett Hodgson will be named at fullback for his goalkicking prowess, with Roosters forward and Blues stalwart Craig Fitzgibbon left out of the side.

Fitzgibbon will be placed on standby for injured North Queensland forward Luke O'Donnell, who has a rib cartilage injury he sustained in the Anzac Test.

Anasta will win the No6 jumper for Wednesday week's Origin opener at Telstra Stadium despite being selected at lock in City's narrow loss to Country on Friday night.

Selectors believe Anasta is the best option at five-eighth, despite considerable pressure from some quarters to select Jamie Lyon from England, Dragons star Mark Gasnier or even Newcastle's Kurt Gidley.

The Sunday Telegraph understands that selectors will choose the Anasta-Gower partnership as a low-risk combination going into game one on May 24.

Anasta's selection will leave high-profile Sea Eagles halfback Matt Orford once again on the outer at representative level.

Manly's key signing failed to leave his mark on the City-Country match and selectors will opt for a pairing who have extensive Origin experience.

Anasta's smooth transition after replacing Trent Barrett following game one of last year's 2-1 series win was a huge consideration for the selectors.

Former NSW captain Steve Mortimer backed Anasta's retention.

"Braith deserves his chance," Mortimer said.

"Of all the possibilities and options that played on Friday night, he was most deserving of the five-eighth job.

"Although he's probably not playing his best footy at the Roosters, he's a player who has the ability to rise up to the occasion of State of Origin. Once he pulls on that Blues jersey, his game will go to that next level."

Hodgson is also set for a return to Origin after a four-year hiatus.

The Tigers captain is believed to have beaten off the late challenge of Dragons utility and Country fullback Ben Hornby.

Hodgson felt his form warranted selection after another solid performance for City on Friday night.

"I was very happy with my game," Hodgson said.

"I've been pleased with my form this season and believe I'm capable of doing the job in the Blues jersey."

The NSW team for Origin I will be announced tomorrow at 11am.

Anasta, Gower Blues halves
May 15, 2006

BRAITH Anasta and Craig Gower have been named, as expected, as the New South Wales halves for the State of Origin series opener against Queensland at Telstra Stadium on May 24

The pair get their chance following the representative retirement of halfback Andrew Johns and five-eighth Trent Barrett.

Anasta was named despite question marks over his form for Sydney Roosters this season, while Gower was struggling with injury before playing in the NSW City-Country Origin match in Dubbo on Friday.

Anasta played at lock for City.

NSW chairman of selectors Bob McCarthy said Gower was preferred to Matt Orford as the Manly halfback had not taking his opportunity during the City-Country fixture.

"Orford (playing for Country) had a chance and didn't really take it with both hands," McCarthy said at the team announcement.

"We can't afford to experiment in this first game.

"We have got to win this first game and get it out of the way.

"We just felt we (needed) the experience of Gower and Anasta."

Test pair Mark Gasnier and Matt Cooper were named in the centres despite injury concerns, with Luke Lewis and Eric Grothe placed on standby in case they fail fitness checks.

Gasnier has a hip injury, and he will not be able to train fully until next Monday, just two days before the match at Homebush.

Cooper will not be able to run freely until at least Friday because of a hamstring injury.

Gasnier did not play for the Dragons against New Zealand in Wollongong on Saturday, when Cooper was withdrawn five minutes into the second half because of the hamstring strain. Wests Tigers fullback Brett Hodgson edged out Dragons utility Ben Hornby for the No.1 jersey, while Manly's Brent Kite will partner Canterbury Bulldogs' Willie Mason in the front row.

NEW SOUTH WALES: Brett Hodgson, Matt King, Mark Gasnier, Matt Cooper, Timana Tahu, Braith Anasta, Craig Gower, Brent Kite, Danny Buderus (captain), Willie Mason, Nathan Hindmarsh, Steve Simpson, Luke O'Donnell. Interchange: Craig Wing, Steve Menzies, Mark O'Meley, Andrew Ryan. Standby: Luke Lewis, Eric Grothe.

Too many old heads in their team as usual. I think the fresh young QLDers will roll over the top of these boys.

If i was a Blues supporter i'd be pretty happy with that team but why is Luke Rooney being overlooked in favour of Luke Lewis and how did Menzies still get a jumper, he hasn't really played that great (n' i'm a Menzies fan btw)...

I also thought that Amos Roberts might have made the bench as an impact player as he covers a # of positions n' covers those positions well...

I agree I was hoping they would go for Gallen over Menzies - Gallen would kill them in Origin!
