here is an intresting but long article so ill shorten it down and post some intresting parts:

A total of 2.569 million people watched the game, much bigger than the 2.1 million to watch the Canterbury Bulldogs win last year, or 2.351 million that watched the upset win in 2003 by the Penrith team against Easts.

More than 1.186 million people watched in Sydney, the biggest audience again since the Oztam ratings system started in 2001 and with the presence of the North Queensland team in last night's game, it was also a record audience in Brisbane with a huge 778,000 people watching.

now here is the real good part...and people say Victorians dont care about rugby league?

Even in Melbourne it was the most watched program on the night with an average of 514,000 people tuning in to give Nine a rare victory in the Southern capital based on a Rugby league game, admittedly a special one.

The rest of the article is here: http://www.terrytelevision.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1128307827&archive=&start_from=&ucat=11&

Yes thats right 514,000 victorians watched a grand final between 2 out of state teams. thats why channel nine should put more footy on down there at a decent time!

it says in the article:

But compared to the AFL audience, the NRL game fell far short. More than 3.39 million people watched the Swannies win, with the audience in Sydney of 994,000 uncomfortably close to the audience in the same city which watched Wests Tigers win 30-16.

and the NRL say that having the game at night improves the ratings?? this will just increase calls to bring back the day GF

Take into account that the AFL grand final has always rated higher than the NRL grand final, regardless of whether it's a day or night game.

This is a good result, especially in victoria.

Seeing as the Swans were playing, and every year there is a Sydney team playing in the NRL GF, I am not surprised. The NRL is an organisation of Sydney idiots who will always give preference to Sydney clubs unless they are really killing the game. They begrudgingly gave an SOO game back to Melbourne, but they aren't stopping the progress of the game by holding a night GF. Queensland complains, the NRL refuses to budge.
