NRL grand final ratings figures soar

The national television audience for Sunday's NRL grand final has topped four million viewers after regional figures were added to the overall ratings.

In total, 4.132 million fans watched the Wests Tigers defeat North Queensland 30-16, an increase of 800,000 viewers to last year's decider between the Bulldogs and the Sydney Roosters.

At one stage on Sunday night, 96 per cent of television sets in the Townsville region were tuned into WIN for the match. Overall, the WIN network in regional Queensland added an overall total of 500,000 viewers to the national figure.

More than 900,000 fans were tuned in across the NSW regional markets through NBN and WIN.

The match was the most watched television program of the year in Sydney and Brisbane.

"The figures show the depth of support there is for the game, particularly in the two states of NSW and Queensland that represent more than half Australia's population and giving advertisers access to more than half the nation's retail activity," NRL chief executive David Gallop said.

"On one level it was a fairytale that everyone could appreciate but importantly it also reflects an ongoing love people have for rugby league in our key markets.

"This year's figures have also been encouraging for the interest generated in both Melbourne and regional Victoria and hopefully we can build on that through the Melbourne Storm next season."

900,000 in regional NSW and 500,000 in regional QLD is just massive, it is titantic!

And it just illustrates one of rugby league's strengths. In New South Wales and Queensland the population is widely dispersed. And these figures aren't included in OzTam ratings.

Where as in AFL strongholds, the population is nearly totally centred around capital areas, such as Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

The populations in QLD and NSW outside of Brisbane and Sydney are massive.

And the regional areas in Queensland, especially will just continue to grow and grow. Especially SEQLD, which is why it is so fantastic that the Gold Coast are coming into the competition in 2007.

The massive figure in Melbourne is very promising! Especially considering it is off the back of no hype or marketing. This should greatly encourage the ARL and NRL who are currently planning how to spend our $23 million investment in Victoria.

Very good signs for victoria...you would think. But you would prolly think wrong, Channel nine down there are hopeless and dont have one ounce of care for the storm or rugby league. Hell will freeze over before the storm/rugby league gets a decent run on 9 down there.

I think the NRL should make a seperate TV deal for Victoria and allow them to have games on another channel like ABC or SBS...i know the storm CEO has tried to look into this option aswell.

thats a good idea. same should be done for NSWRL games (PL and JF) in NSW and QLD, because in QLD we get QLD Cup games on ABC.
