THE statue of Queensland rugby league legend Wally Lewis has been painted blue on the eve of the second State of Origin clash in Brisbane tonight.

The statue outside Lang Park - where the match between Queensland and NSW will be held tonight - was painted in the NSW colours of sky blue jersey and dark blue shorts.

The incident reportedly happened about 4.30am (AEST).

The blue has since been removed.

A statue of Queensland rugby league great Wally Lewis has been painted blue ahead of the State of Origin clash.

The bronze statue, at Lang Park in Brisbane, was given a new look after vandals painted on dark blue shorts, a light blue jersey and socks to make the former Queensland State of Origin captain look like a NSW player.

The word "NSW" was also scrawled across a shield which the statue of Lewis hoists above his head.

The vandalism comes ahead of the State of Origin decider at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Queensland is already one down in the 2006 series after a 17-16 loss in the opening game in Sydney.

Police said no complaint about the vandalism had yet been made, and police would not investigate unless to do so by stadium management.
Bottled water has been used to wash down the statue, given tough Level Three water restrictions which came into effect across most of south-east Queensland on Tuesday.

Lewis, dubbed the Emperor of Lang Park, enjoyed a career which spanned three decades and is regarded by many as the greatest rugby league player of the modern era.
His statue was erected at the southern end of the stadium in 1992.

LOL... I heard about this on 2KY this morning and thought it was a joke.... then I saw it on the news.... not the nicest thing to do... but I loved the Blue Wally with Blue hair... it was classic... :D :D

Then again we need something to fire up State of Origin here in NSW to be honest, it has gotten lost in the sea of Green and Gold that is the Socceroos Express at World Cup Germany 2006... ;)... and this might just do it for the fans of NSW.. :)

Oh I agree it is stupid and should not have been done.. however it was also very very funny.. but still not right IMO... no one should vandalise others property.. ;)

Not sure about QLD but I guess though they knew NSW needs something about SOO, I mean normally SOO would be the talk of the town, but the last week all anyone has heard about here in NSW on the news and radio is Ohriegen, Kaisersaluten, Socceroos, Street Parties, Norton Street and Italy and World Cup 2006, proof being that there is a 12 page piece in the Telegraph about SOO, but it is surrounded by an 8 page one on the Socceroos as well as a 5 page front spread and everyone is reading about that.

There has been little to no mention of the NSW State of Origin team... so they needed to bring it back to the forefront of peoples minds.. and I guess that will do it.. ;)

Pretty stupid in a way....from what i heard and saw the paint came off easy so unless they used water based paints or something like that im not sure. In which case it isnt a big deal. Vandalism is wrong but this is just a little prank if it was spray painted with offensive words then it wouldnt be tolerated but i dont think it is all that bad really.

Freaking disgusting I tell you, thats vandalism and a CRIME, nothing to be be applauded. Its all great and fun to have rivalry, but thats property of QLD, thats a great statue representing a great player, thats not doing something great, thast being disrespectful. And wether QLD and NSW have a great rivalry or not, we always respect each other.

I guess it goes to show the nature of these NSW players, think theyr'e going to lose, so they better get something on us. Absolutley feral, thats the dumbest thing to do>!!

Um I agree with you on this... but it wasn't our players.. it was a small group of fans if you could even call them that... I don't think the players would have been that stupid...

I don't see much of an issue with it to be honest, it just shows the rivalry is still as strong as ever. BUT HES OUR STATUE! :p

Exactly...it could have been much much worse. Noone was hurt it took minimal time and effort to get it cleaned. I know its agianst the law and i know its wrong...but when you think about it there wasnt much harm done at all.

Exactly... if they wanted to be really bad they could have used alot stronger paint, maybe even got a sledgehammer and broken it, but all they did was show that NSW is just as passionate as the QLDers... SOO is alive and well peoples! GO QLD!

Agree with Steelers and super cronk - nothing more than a "storm in a tea cup"...no one harmed, the statue not ruined. I don't condone vandalism though hey, it is more original than each state's premiere swapping flags!

I am sure there will be some innocent revenge :D

What a plague of canetoads.. wait that has already happened..

We are smart and don't have large statues of our icons in broad daylight, they are in museums and well secured places.. ;)

You could always paint the statue at Circular Quay.. but frankly the old digger has already got copious amounts of paint and rust, wouldn't make any difference IMO.. ;)

BUT YES GO THE RIVALRY AND GO THE BLUES... SHOW THEM WHAT YOU ARE MADE OF... :D :D

Off to the local now to join my mates and cheer on the mighty New South Wales Blues.. :)

The best thing to do in this situation is the opposite of what everyone expects. Let's paint Wally blue again

Agreed.. doesn't deserve to host the decider.. this is between NSW and QLD and should stay that way IMO...

HOWEVER in saying that great news to hear that Melbourne only has to get 4000 tickets more to make a sell out, I know they will do it and everyone will be very proud... not the least myself as I want to see Rugby League to well in the southern state.. :)

same the worse thing IMO is it advantages NSW more than QLD cause we have to travel alot longer to get to the game. its QLD v's NSW it should be played in either QLD or NSW

I was talking to a security guard at origin 2 and he said that no of the staff were too worried, their was a note apparently at the bottom of the statue under a rock, saying that it was water based paint or somethin and just scrub it to get it off. (i wanted to post this straight away but forgot and it slipped my mind till i read this again) so i just think it's a little harmless fun, that some people are taking it to heart. if it had been permant or destroyed the statue then i would 100% understand.
