Players dumped after airport incident
June 14, 2006
THE NSWRL today sacked five players from its under 17s squad for tonight's State of Origin curtain-raiser for taking goods from a Sydney Airport shop.
The players were stood down and replaced in the Suncorp Stadium match for breaching the NSWRL code of conduct and left after being met by parents or guardians.
A media release from the NSWRL said: "The breach stems from the players being a party to the removal of a number of low-cost items from a store at Sydney Airport."
While NSWRL general manager Geoff Carr said the players might have seen the incident as just a "prank", it was important both the law and the game's code of conduct were adhered to.
"It's pretty clear the kids didn't see it as any more than a prank at the time but that is no excuse in the end," Carr said.
"We are talking about boys under the age of 18 who now have to face their families and the repercussions of their actions.
"It's a tough lesson but an important one in terms of what is expected of representative teams."
All items were to be returned to the shop owner.
The NSWRL Board has asked for a formal report from team management to assess whether further action may be required.
The NSWRL said the shop proprietor had been contacted about the incident and indicated he was satisfied with the actions of the team management.
