MAL MENINGA has been appointed to coach Queensland in next year's State of Origin series.
The Queensland Rugby League offered Meninga – who played 32 Origins and scored a record 161 points – the job today.
He will replace Newcastle's Michael Hagan, who steps aside because of his commitments to the Knights.
Meninga's support staff – tipped to include sacked Bronco assistant Kevin Walters and former Origin favourite Trevor Gillmeister – will be named next month.

Good Luck to Meninga... will be interesting to see if he can win considering he doesn't coach a team in the NRL... good luck though.. ;)

^ In my mind, this is even better for QLD, no stress from the club game.

Brilliant decision!!!!!One of the best rugby league players ever will coach the maroons. And if Trevor Gillmeister gets appointed as deputy it will be a great duo who both have a great coaching ethos.

The thing i dont like about this QLD coach issue ...is that bellamy is being made out as the guy that was looking to be the QLD coach and some people have said not so ncie things about him. But he has always stated that he isnt going for the job he even said earlier this year that he wasnt really intrested but if it came up he would look into it. The QRL were the ones after him.
Not my first choice when you have established NRL coaches in front of him, let's hope the selectors are made to be accountable for this decision if we get it wrong.
In saying that, as a proud QLD'er. Mal will have my full support.
Congrats big fella', your appointed on the back of 2 x S.O.O. series defeats, all the best ;)
Cheers

What a joke. surely if we want to get back the SOO Trophy we need a real coach. This will be the same as Wally coaching the team. a great player he might have been but that does not make him a great coach. He didn't exactly set the world on fire when he coached Canberra.

Atleast give him a chance before you rub his face in the dirt.

He is only on a year to year contract.

Not quite rubbing has face in dirt but I think its a valid point. He hasn't had that much success in the past coaching. Personally I'd prefer the best coach for the job coaching NSW whether he is from Queensland or Queenstown.
That said good luck to big Mal, but I still hope we whitewash you next year;)
I agree. I think he is a trophy placement. Unproven as a coach he will need to be surrounded by quality. Never know he may pull of a Fatty and produce a series win. People management at this level is probably the biggest key. Good luck to the big fella.
NSW 3-0!!!!

Would you say that if Wayne Bennett was appointed as NSW coach......i think not :p But seriously Meninga has done well at coaching and its not like he hasnt got any experience. And its amazing he has been coach for less than 24 hours and people are already dissing him!

How about if Wally Lewis became the NSW coach?
How about if Wally Lewis became the NSW coach?
Yes, as Wally was not that good a coach and I would hope the NSW selectors were able to make such a ridiculous decision.
Members are entitled to believe that we as QLD should of looked from the best available option to coach are team, with Mal up against Bellamy and Elliot, he is not that.
The game is knee deep into the professional era of rugby league and whether or not a coach is South African, English or even worse a New South Welshmen (j/k) we as a State on the back foot should be able to look past that given talent wise on the field we are behind the 8-ball IMO at the moment.
Once more, as a passionate QLD'er, I wish the big unit all the best.

Queenslander players dont need coaching........they need inspiration and that is what Meninga will give them........imagine Mal before the game yelling and swearing at his players, trying to pyshce his boys up so that when they go onto the field they play for Queensland and not for themselves. Its an image that would make any Queenslander happy :D

But I don't think Bellamy ever wanted the QLD job. The QRL were chasing him. I can see Bellamy as a NSW coach in no time and an AUS coach of the future, so would coaching QLD hamper his chances to coach NSW??

That is exactly what I was aiming at. They dont need a 'coach' as such more a figure head. There will be plenty of people ariund to help devise game plans and such. Meninga has enormous respect and so will command a lot of passion.
QLD will still lose though

We don't need coaching? Perhaps watch the last 2 Origin series as I fear that 'we do not need coaching' is well off the mark.
You raise a good point though, 'they need inspiration'...I 100% agree and perhaps that is overlooked at this level when looking at the coach. Michael Hagan was not able to provide that, Gould did, Stuart does and Mal will.

The idea of coaching in professional sports these days is dead.....the players know what to do, they only need guidance......so a coach is more of a guidance officer ;)

Well summed up and right on the money. Coaches are really only there to give guidance nowdays.

well in SOO anyway. In club games the coach and staff is very important.

Do not misinterpret my agreement with one point you raised as changing my opinion that the 'best coach available' should be selected for the job.
Labelling a coach as a mere 'guidance officer' is rather naive and a slap in the face to those who are paid professionally in our game to do just that.
Would a club be prepared to outlay 100's of thousands for a mere 'guidance officer'? No. It is rather naive to believe our elite players are 'that damn good' that they need no coaching.

Yes in a club situation they offer more than "guidance" and yes they are being paid 100's of thousands of dollars to do that job........State of Origin is totally different. You are not playing for money or fame, you are playing for your state and if you are good enough to reach what i believe is the pinacle of modern rugby league then you would know what to do.
These players need to remember what they are playing for and that is why Queensland lost direction this year, they were playing as if they were in a club game. And no im not being naive as you put it, i just have the belief that elite players know what they are doing and if they didnt they wouldnt be selected. Thats my two cents, disagree with me if you want.

I love how people end with disagree with me if you want.... :)
Of course we will that is what debate is all about!!

Nope not a problem in the world. As long as the players are NSW boys thats all I care about.
How about if Wally Lewis became the NSW coach?
Hope not, nothing to do with being a queenslander I just don't rate him as a coach.

I think they definately need a coach. Yes Mal would inspire passion but shouldn't playing in maroon provide all the passion they need?
IMO they passed up a golden opportunity on not giving Bellamy the reigns. And I don't see him coaching NSW any time soon, unless Bennett steps down from coaching Australia, Ricky Stuart gets the nod leaving NSW without a coach.
at the end of the day there all just "FOOTBALLER'S" guy's not rocket scientist's.
i remember reading when phil gould took over from tim sheens as N.S.W coach in 92.he was in the first team meeting and was adressing the player's and turned to ben elias and handed him a football, and kept 1 other football for the remainder of the squad.he said to benny, seeing as you like to do things your way you can have your own ball for training and we'll train with our's.now i think you can see the type of ego's involved in professinal rugby league and to say they don't need coaching is just obsurred.needless to say from that day on laurie daley was N.S.W captain and benny played an integral role in gould's next 3 origin series triumphs.
