THE identity of a man charged with the sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl has been suppressed by a Melbourne court over fears for his safety.

The man's lawyer told the court today his client's safety was at issue while he was being held in custody, saying "people have been killed" there.

The 45-year-old Melbourne man was charged on Thursday over an attack on a girl sleeping in an annexe attached to her parent's caravan at the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park on January 2.

He was charged with several offences including sexual penetration with a child under 10, assault with intent to rape and two counts of indecent assault.

The magistrate rejected an application to have the entire proceedings suppressed, saying it was in the public interest to have the matter made public, but agreed to suppress any information which might identify the suspect.

The magistrate said an application for bail may be made this afternoon.

They want to protect this animal from fellow inmates? His identity should be made known. After all he maybe out on bail this afternoon. WT.
I hope that the court then takes responsibility if he was to offend again. How bout the court consider the well being of the kids in the area..instead of protecting this....male :(

Once again, the 'justice' system has let the public down. My god there are a lot of screwed-up things in this world :(
