A PROPOSED law under which some of Victoria's most dangerous sex offenders would be held in jail for years after their sentences end should be extended to other major crimes, the state's opposition said today.
The Sentencing Advisory Council today released a discussion paper that includes a proposal for a continued detention after completion of a jail sentence for a sex offender at high risk of recidivism.
The law, if adopted, would replace existing supervision orders introduced 18 months ago to monitor notorious sex offenders.
Victorian opposition legal affairs spokesman Andrew McIntosh said his party would support the legislation, but added it should be extended to include other major crimes including murder and arson.
"It should be extended to other offences knowing that at the end of the day it will be a judge that will make the decision that this person, to a high degree of probability, is likely to re-offend and the Victorian community has to be protected," Mr McIntosh said.
"That's the break. That's the assurance the community have that it will not be abused.
"What the Government can't get through its thick head is that Victorians want to be protected ... not further debate, more bureaucracy, another inquiry.
"What they want is action, and they want action now. The Liberal Party stands ready to pass the relevant laws in two weeks' time when we sit (in the parliament) again."
