Great news for the PNG Kumuls.

I'd have moved Fien to halfback and Luke to hooker.

But I'm cheering for the Kumuls so this is great news!

Aizue wants shot at Kiwis

FEARLESS Papua New Guinea hitman Makali Aizue has declared the reputation of New Zealand’s big name forward pack will count for nothing when the Gold Coast gets its first taste of the Rugby League World Cup on Saturday night.

In the first of two games to be held at Skilled Park, the Kumuls will collide with the Kiwis in what is shaping as an explosive showdown.

Considered unlucky to lose to England in Townsville at the weekend, the Kumuls arrived on the Coast on Sunday and held their first training run of the week yesterday at Pizzey Park.

Throughout the intense two-hour session, the Kumuls could be heard shouting “let’s get respect” and “bodies on the line NZ”, leaving little doubt of their intentions ahead of the Kiwi clash.

“Definitely, I would like to take the game to them,” said hulking prop Aizue, who turned on a bruising performance during the 32-22 loss to the English.

“I would definitely love to lead the forwards from the front against New Zealand, they are a big side.

“Reputation doesn’t mean anything to me. It is all about putting my body on the line for my country.

“That is what I am looking forward to doing.”

Aizue, who plays for Hull KR in the Super League, backed his side for a powerful performance against the Kiwis, who are considered favourites to make the World Cup final against Australia. While the Kumuls know they face an extremely tough task, there is an underlying feeling in the camp that they are more than capable of launching a massive upset.

“This team now is all about passion,” said 30-year-old Aizue.
“We play for each other.

“Everyone said we would get beaten easy but we gave it to the English and now everybody is saying we have got a chance. It is great for the whole country.”

PNG coach Adrian Lam said Aizue spoke for the whole side when he said New Zealand’s fearsome reputation would count for little.

“Makali’s words there would probably echo through a lot of the other players,” he said.

“This is more about us than who we are playing against.

“The hardest part about coaching this side was bringing a group of 24 players together and finding a bond there. They are from all over the world and some of them don’t speak English or have never been out of Papua New Guinea before.

“But as you see today we have already done that and we have done it pretty good.”

Lam is set to name an unchanged line-up to take on the Kiwis after centre Jessie Joe was yesterday cleared of a fractured eye socket.

“He has got a typical PNG head and bones so he is going to be all right probably,” said Lam.

Kiwis will certainly be more dangerous with Luke and Inu.

But I'm still hoping for a Kumuls upset.

I can't wait. I have my PNG Kumuls shirts and I'm gonna try and make a flag or banner for PNG.

Get into the spirit guys!

PNG can 'go beserk' if they beat Kiwis

PAPUA New Guinea coach Adrian Lam says his players have his permission to "go berserk" and party for a week if they spring a massive World Cup upset against New Zealand on Saturday.

Lam has allowed his players to soak up the compliments and praise since they went close to toppling England in the Cup opener Townsville last weekend before going down 32-22.

He said he'd already approved a party if they go one better this weekend and win.

"I don't care if they go berserk for a week, I wouldn't mind because they would have worked very hard to get it and it would be a history-making win," Lam said.

"If they win, they can take up residency down here (Gold Coast) and we can work out their visas to get them back home later if they want."

Lam is carrying out a delicate juggling act with his players, letting them enjoy the limelight while at the same time keeping them focused on the game against the Kiwis.

"Everywhere we've been people are patting the players on the back," Lam said.

"I think it's helped them understand what they achieved and the respect they've earned from people which was one of the big things driving this team.

"It's a pool (against heavyweights Australia, England and New Zealand) where we could have really embarrassed ourselves and while we've got a little bit of respect, we still haven't achieved a victory.

"We've made a lot of friends and won a lot of hearts but if we go one better the place (PNG) will really go berserk."

Lam wasn't convinced New Zealand, who've made three key changes with try scoring ace Kris Inu, hooker Issac Luke and hard-running forward David Fa'alogo coming into the match squad, will not make more changes.

"I'm not sure that'll be their final line up," said a suspicious Lam.

"I'm not saying what changes they'll make, maybe their bench will be different."

Lam though believes Kearney's decision to stick with Thomas Leuluai and Benji Marshall in the halves is the right one despite criticism of Leuluai's quiet performance against Australia last weekend.

"That's probably the best pairing they have so they have to persist with it and get it right," he said.

"They proved they can play together before and no doubt they can do it again.

"They would have all been disappointed with their performance and it looks like he (Kearney) has applied the blowtorch to some individuals to get them to aim up before the third game and the semi-finals."

Lam hinted at a possible re-shuffle of his own bench with centre Jesse Jo Parker (facial cut) named but still to be cleared to play.

Latest PAX for the game is a mere 10,115.

If we get 10-12k I'll have to bring out the D word and label the crowd a disgrace which reflects poorly on the Gold Coast and Titans fans.

For christ's sake get out there and attend the game!
